6 volt starter motor bush, for air cooled VW's with 6 volt starter motor, and 6 volt gearbox.
Air cooled VW starter motors have no internal front bushing, relying instead on an external floating bush in the gearbox bell housing.
With the introduction of 12 volt electrics to air cooled VW's the sizes of the starter shaft and the gearbox hole were both decreased to allow for the larger 12 volt flywheel.
Early and late gearboxes and starters are interchangeable by the use of conversion bushes.
Approximate 6 volt and 12 volt bush sizes are shown below (with the sizes for this bush in red) should you have any uncertainty as to which bush is required.
